How to Use Digital Scrapbooking Templates + Bonus FREE Download

Sharing is caring!

One of the first things I did when I started digital scrapbooking was learn how to use a template to begin creating my first page layouts.

If you have never used a template before, or are maybe wondering how it can help you, this article will explain the basics of getting started with creating page layouts when using one.

And, as a special bonus, we have a free scrapbook template for photoshop you can use!

Why Use Digital Scrapbooking Templates?

If you have never used a Photoshop template before, you’ll soon find that they quickly become one of your favorite digital scrapbooking supplies!

We have a number of templates available on our site you can use and download!

Here’s the Main Reasons We Love Using Scrapbook Templates for Photoshop:

Reason #1: Make Easier Design Decisions:

Using a Photoshop scrapbook template really takes out all of the guess work of trying to figure out where to place photographs and elements!

If you’re the type of person who is never sure where to put your digital scrapbook elements and embellishments, using a template quickly helps you have an idea of where and how to layer items such as flowers, ribbons, and more!

Reason #2: Save time!

Not spending hours wondering what should go where saves a LOT of time when making your pages, which means more memories documented sooner! A scrapbook page layout can come together easily in less than 10 minutes {or even faster if you wanted to!}

In this tutorial, I will show you the basics of using a template to create your own layouts! AND, for a fun surprise, I’ve included a FREE template for you to download to follow along with!

Here’s the Template Tutorial & Your Free Download:

In this tutorial I’m working with this free digital scrapbooking template which you can download below.

You can download it from our site here:

The first step is after you’ve downloaded and unzipped the file is open the file with Adobe Photoshop on your computer.

It is a good idea to always save the new file separate from the original file. To do this, you will want to go to the File Menu, and then select the “Save As” menu option and save it as a new layout.

This will help avoid the problem you might have if were to accidentally overwrite the original design file!

Step 2: Place, Resize & Arrange Your Scrapbook Elements

In our tutorial on Creating your first layout, we go over the basics of placing, rotating, resizing and arranging elements and photos and papers in your layouts.

If you are unfamiliar with these steps, you may want to refer to that article first so that you can get the basics down before using the scrapbook templates free download.

Once you’ve placed an element over an item in the Photoshop template, you can hide the template layer by clicking on the eye icon in the Layers panel or you can delete it.

After you have arranged and placed all of your digital scrapbooking embellishments and elements in the way you like, you can then add text and other effects, such as adding drop shadows or creating digital border frame effects to your photographs.

Step 3: Save and Enjoy!

Here is our finished page that we made! You can see it somewhat resembles the original layout, but has enough uniqueness to it that you have unlimited options to using it over and over again for creative designs every time you open it up to use it!

You of course, can also change up how you have your elements arranged, as this will give you even more flexibility and help each of your designs seem unique from one another.

Last Step: Save & Share Your Pages!

Now that our final scrapbook page is complete, we can go ahead and save & print out to put in our albums or export to turn into a photobook album.

  1. Can you explain step by step how to make a scrapbook using templates I am so confused if you use a template how does that work, do I need a color printer

    • Hi Debbie – our video shows you how to use the templates in Photoshop – basically you use clipping masks to clip your photos to the boxes and then you swap out the template elements with elements from your kit.

To print them, you can print them at a print shop or you can use your colored printer if you wish, though a print shop will give you a higher quality professional print.

Hope that helps, let me know if you have any other questions!
